What we collect, why we collect it, and the controls you have over your data.
Last updated: July 28, 2026
1. Overview
Contently, Inc. builds a writing platform for teams. This policy explains what personal data we handle when you use the product, the website, and the API.
Our default is to collect the minimum needed to run the service, and to never use your drafts to train our base models.
2. Information we collect
- Account data: name, work email, organization, role, and authentication identifiers.
- Content data: drafts, comments, voice profiles, uploaded style guides, and export targets.
- Usage data: feature events, request counts, device and browser type, and approximate location from IP.
- Payment data: billing address and plan details. Card numbers are handled by our payment processor — we never see or store them.
- Support data: messages you send to our team and any attachments you include.
3. How we use your information
- Deliver the features you use: drafting, suggestions, collaboration, and exports.
- Authenticate you and secure your workspace.
- Process payments and send billing notices.
- Diagnose errors, monitor performance, and prevent abuse.
- Send product updates and service announcements. Marketing email is opt-in and can be turned off at any time.
4. AI processing and model training
When you draft, your text is sent to a model provider to generate a response. We operate under zero-retention agreements: providers process the request and discard it, and neither we nor they train foundation models on your content.
Voice profiles are derived from material you upload and are scoped to your workspace only. They are never shared across accounts.
6. Data retention
Active workspace content is retained while your account is open. After cancellation, content stays exportable for 30 days and is then permanently deleted. Backups roll off within a further 60 days.
Billing records are kept for as long as tax and accounting law requires.
7. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export, delete, or restrict processing of your personal data, and to object to certain uses. You can exercise most of these directly from account settings, or by emailing us.
We respond to verified requests within 30 days and do not charge for them. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
8. Security
We encrypt data in transit with TLS 1.3 and at rest with AES-256. Access to production systems is limited, logged, and requires multi-factor authentication.
We maintain a SOC 2 Type II report, run annual third-party penetration tests, and offer SSO and audit logging on Team plans. Report suspected vulnerabilities to security@contently.ai.
10. International transfers
Contently operates in the United States and the European Union. Where data moves across regions, we rely on Standard Contractual Clauses and applicable adequacy decisions. Team plans can pin all storage to an EU region.
11. Children's privacy
The service is not directed to children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect their personal data. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.
12. Changes to this policy
We update this policy when our practices change. Material changes are announced by email and in-app at least 30 days in advance, and the “last updated” date above always reflects the current version.
13. Contact
Email privacy@contently.ai with any privacy question or request. For the terms that govern your use of the service, see our terms of service.
